Friends 'n' Family - Photo Album  - 23rd May 2002

Couple of pictures of the wonderful incident that occurred last Wednesday (22nd) where Murphy's were digging up the road, and managed to catch the gas main and the water main and the sewage pipe. Right in front of our house.  You can imagine. And we always suspected we lived in a bit of a shit-hole.

The workmen were very friendly, using the gas-meter in our kitchen to ensure the pressure didn't drop whilst they were securing the main and putting a bypass in (and presumably ensuring it didn't go an icky brown colour).  The workman did ask Pat whether she noticed anything odd about the children in the court. The way they gathered around the hole and looked into it as it sprayed water and gas and sewage up, saying "Errrrrr... It smells" and then carrying on staring at it blankly, as if several years of Nutra-Sweet had damaged their brain membranes (not that I'm suggesting that's probably exactly what it is or anything) etc. etc.  What could she say?

The amusing thing was that I was cycling home late after teaching at college, so it was dark when I returned.  My wife phoned her mother (Betty) who (in a very concerned voice) said "I do hope he doesn't cycle into the hole" - the mental imagery that that sets up is quite amusing.  The reality was that about ten vans, large quantities of barriers, spotlights, and dozens of workmen made it rather hard to miss. (Everything short of Klaxons, in fact!)  The photos are a bit fuzzy.  When I have a bit more dosh, I'll invest in a better camera.

Over the next few nights, they worked into the early hours of the morning (after 3am anyway, which is when we finally got to sleep) with their generators going. Argh!

Night-time shots from the window, so quite difficult to decipher. There's a mini-JCB on the left, lights around the side, van behind, barriers around, and several workmen.
Another shot, not much better. The hole, interestingly, is now (a week later) about three times the size, and an interesting L shape. We watch it growing day-by-day, because we are very sad and have nothing else in our life.
