Re: Albert Prince

I just wanted to send a little note to say a great big thank you to everyone who gave my family so much love & support in December. It meant so much to all of us, especially me. I knew what you all meant to my Dad. You were ALL his friends & he loved you all so much. You were always there for him & being able to reply to your letters & cards gave him something to do on those rare occasions when I wasn't driving him up the wall.

I apologise for taking so long to send out this thank you but as a lot of you may know I lived with my Dad so I've been extremely busy finding a place to live. Its strange to be living on my own but I enjoy the freedom & quiet - not that my Dad was a noisy man (apart from the occasions he would suddenly burst into song & have a little dance around the kitchen!). He was sometimes a bit loopy but in a loveable way, that's why he had so many friends, friends that I would like to stay in touch with. My Email address & home address are at the bottom of this message & I can assure everyone that I will be back at the conventions as soon as I can.

Once again, thank you all for making my Dads life so enjoyable, you all meant so much to him.

Yours,

Ginette Prince xx

Re: Vincent Mask used in Beauty & The Beast Ballet

I stumbled across the page of your website that featured the production  of Beauty and the Beast and saw that you were using a mask I've only seen  once, and have been looking for ever since.  I was wondering where you  purchased the mask, and if the supplier has a website.

Reply from Simon...

Take a look at the details of  the production at http://simonhuggins.com/ukhelpers/conventions/2002_ballet/index.htm and you can see that the mask was made by the costume designer.   If you wish to contact her, I would advise you to contact the ballet school and pass on your details with your request.  The address is on the web page given above.

Re: Music from Beauty & The Beast

Hello my name is Maria and I saw the series beauty and the beast many years ago. and I totally fell in love with it. but its not possible to se it again, I have contacted the TV stations around here in Norway and Sweden but they can't promise that they will show it again. anyways my question it what is the man called, he who made the music for the series, I have this one melody stuck on my mind that I keep playing on my piano. But I would love to hear more of the music from that series.... can you help me please. Oh and I'm sorry for you bad writing in English...

Reply from Simon...

I believe it was Lee Holridge that composed the theme tune. You can hear it on my web site music page at:- http://www.simonhuggins.com/helpers/music/index.htm

If you would like to own a copy of the music, plus other music from the series, plus Vincent giving various poetry readings, then you're probably looking for the "Of Love and Hope" album.

People sell copies of the album regularly (on Vinyl and CD) on ebay.com - just search on something like "beauty beast love hope" - they tend to go for anything between $30 and $80 !!!  It's a real collector's item.

Re: "Open Letter to B&B Fans re. artwork prints etc."

From the studio of Kevin Barnes - gentleman artist: An Open Letter to Fandom (October 2002)

To those who keep the candles burning...

Remember me? Tall, scraggly, uncertain, smiling yet somewhat sad, singer of songs in paint on canvas. Time has passed, and much has transpired since my absence from the tunnels, so I thought I’d drop by to say “hi” again.

“Hi again.”

For those who haven’t heard it tapped out on the pipes, my little life has gone through some significant changes in the past few years.

In the Autumn of 1999 my first one-man show - “Beloved: The Divine Romance” - opened at a small local gallery in Southern California. The exhibition consisted of a series of images inspired by the beauty and mystery of the romance between man and woman, and how this relationship is but a shadow of the spiritual love affair between God and the human soul. It was a song the Lord placed within my heart, and I sang it with all my might. Yet, for all the insights and philosophies I had about the nature of love, I was still studying it very much as though it were through a dark glass. It was true and beautiful, but largely theory.

Fast forward to February 2001...

At a Christian art show where three of my paintings were on display, the entire hue and movement of my life was forever altered. Her name is Courtney.

Through the noise and commotion of that crowded gallery, her smile and the quiet, gentle purity of her spirit reached out and touched some shadowy place just beneath my left rib - a chamber laced with cobwebs, where no light ever shone. Like the only foot in all the kingdom that would ever fit the glass slipper, her heart slipped into mine that blessed, blessed night, and snuggled into a hollow which had grown cold and numb with longing, with waiting, with hope deferred. It’s as if she were somehow always meant to be there. She just glowed (you should have seen her that night - I still do, every time I close my eyes) and slowly her light began to warm and thaw what had grown so dark. And as I woke from this enchantment, this half-sleep of wonder, I realized, to my utter awe and amazement, that my waking world had been infused with a dream beyond all imagining.

“Because the birthday of my life is come - my love is come to me!”

In the following weeks we would begin a courtship (we never did really date - we just knew) which could be described as nothing less than divinely romantic. Six months, reams of e-mails and over one hundred love poems later, my beloved and I were sealed and consecrated to one another in a ceremony attended by family and a few close friends. Neither of us ever imagined any labor so hard, any trials so difficult, any blessings so voluminous, any joys so deep and abidingly beautiful as those which come from this miracle of marriage. And above and beyond it all, the honeymoon continues to this day. We expect it always will.

If I could pluck any one jewel from this crown of blessings and share it with you all, it would be this: when it comes to what I will call - for lack of a better term - “true love,” the real thing does indeed exist, and it makes Vincent and Catherine or any other love story or fairy tale you’ve ever heard before seem like a teardrop on paper compared to the swelling roar of the ocean.

To love and be loved in such a way is to know the heart of God, our Creator, the Divine Lover of our souls. If you’re married, ask God to pour the fullness of his love into your heart, then turn around and give it all away, selflessly, to your beloved spouse. If you are waiting for your soul mate, wait patiently (even 36 years if necessary!) and by all means wait purely, chastely (there’s no adequate way of expressing in mere words on paper the joy of sharing your wedding night with your first, your last, your only). For those who have suffered the pain of loving and losing and being hurt by the very thing which is meant to bring joy, I weep for you - but through the tears I say that our God is a God of fresh starts and new beginnings, and that the very muck and refuse of the past can nourish the soil from which may spring the most beautiful white rose.

And to everyone, whether or not you ever know the joy of earthly romance, I urge you to consider that there is a Lover, a King so passionate and devoted to you that he left his throne and crown and glory behind, put on the rags of a humble servant, and laid down his very life for you. His name is Jesus, and his arms are always open to you. None of us will ever know a greater love than his.

Now, on to the business of art...

Art-wise, things have been quiet... yet building. The “Beloved” series I started five years ago (with but a kind friend modelling for me) will most likely be left behind as but a preliminary sketch for the work which is now to come. After all, I now have the romance of a lifetime to illustrate and the most beautiful creature ever formed by the hands of God as a live-in model!

Due to the demands inherent in building a new career and a life and future for my wife and myself and - Lord willing, sometime soon - our children, I am no longer producing the 8” x 10” prints of my Beauty and the Beast art as I have in the past. I apologize for any disappointment this might cause.

I am, however, now offering something which I feel far exceeds the former prints. Due to recent advances in the technology of reproducing fine art, I am (FINALLY! - for those of you who have heard me speak of it since the last convention in L.A.) able to offer genuine hand-signed canvas reproductions of my Beauty and the Beast painting “A World of Our Own” (winner of “Best of Show” at A Distant Shore II in 2000).

The image area of the piece is about 12” x 24” (only a few inches less than the original painting) and it will be shipped rolled in a heavy mailing tube for safety, with enough extra canvas left around the edges of the image so that it can be stretched and framed in the traditional manner or matted and framed under glass.

The cost for each custom made reproduction is $200 (less than one-tenth of what the original painting sold for), plus $5 for shipping and handling. If you would like to see the painting online, it may be viewed on both my own site (www.geocities.com/artshadows) and the Laura’s Caverns website. To order or obtain further information, please contact me via e-mail at thecatacombs@hotmail.com. I am also currently offering the last limited edition posters remaining from my first one-man show - “Beloved: The Divine Romance.” The 13” x19” uv-coated card stock art print bears the image of my painting “Seasons: Dissolution” from the “Beloved” series (also viewable on my website) and is available while quantities last for $20. A brochure from the show, bearing multiple images from the series will be included at no charge.

Well, that’s all the news that’s fit to print for now. I will, of course, pass on information of any significant changes or happenings which might occur in the future . Otherwise, just assume that my beloved and I continue to explore and claim new corners of this Promised Land of God’s love to which he’s called us in Christ Jesus.

May the Painter of all beauty and the Singer of love’s song light the chambers of your heart, illuminating the truth of just how precious you are in his sight...

“’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.’”

Love and blessings to you all.

Always rejoicing,

Kevin Barnes

Re: Mistake in "Second Coming"

Hi,

I think there's a teeny mistake in "The Second Coming" by Yeats in your Poetry & Literature section. In the last line, there should be an 's' in 'toward': "Slouching toward*s* Bethlehem to be born."

It's one of my favorite poems, and I couldn't help but notice it. Keep up the great work! I still watch a couple of B&B videos every week.

Cheers,
Diana Poskrop

Editor's Note: Thanks Diana for pointing this out. The verse has now been amended. If you would like to contact Diana, she also has a posting in the Web Pals section.

Dear Simon,

Kate Simmons Ballet School is putting on Beauty and the Beast at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester at the end of April. I am making the beast costume, which I have 'fashioned' on Vincent... I have
having great difficult getting a suitable latex face mask and wondered if you have ever heard of Vincent face masks (or a good Lion/beast one?)

Addendum - Caroline adds this in an email dated 24th February -

Dear Simon

I am delighted to say that Angela Palmer in the US bought a VINCENT mask 12 years ago for her husband to wear to some occasion. It has been in storage in Canada with her parents, and has now been posted on to me.

Thanks for you interest and I am looking forward to completing the Vincent costume.

Re: More about the possible future B&B Series

Hi Simon ---

It was so good of you to include in your web site the Beauty and the Beast material I sent in December. I was in Hawaii visiting my son from 22 December to 3 January so returning home to find my own page in your excellent group of B&B information was a most pleasant surprise. Thank you very much.

The B&B series returning to the UPN TV network is still only a project in development. Viacom, under the name of the Viacom Entertainment Group, owns the Paramount studios which is known as the Paramount
Entertainment Group. Originally, UPN TV and CBS TV existed as separate entities in the Paramount Entertainment Group. Then, in December 2001, the Viacom Entertainment Group decided to consolidate the two networks.

Since then, there has been a constant flurry of resignations, the creation of new programming departments, and the naming of new executives to manage the departments. The development and approval of new comedy
and dramatic programs for both networks continues amidst this clamor and I've been cataloguing the circus through "Variety" and "The Hollywood Reporter" with the intent of ultimately learning who might become the
department or the person responsible for drama development. Should there be a letter or e-mail campaign by B&B fans down the road, it is always more effective to address communications to a specific studio, or person, or department.

I've taken your time with the above because it is the show's foundation and, as we're seeing with "Terminator 3" which concerns Linda Hamilton, fans of B&B will focus much attention on any mention of B&B and I'm
positive that confusion between CBS and UPN will occur not only in the fandom but in the media. A frame of reference of the powers that be will be useful.

Re: Open Letter to the members of Helper's Network, UK

I feel that I suggested the kernel of an idea and you have taken the heat for it!  Certainly at your delightful Nottingham "Masquerades 2000" I did say that if enough of a ground-swell were to actually organize and create a development fund, then maybe "Hollywood" might take notice and act accordingly.

You rightfully informed the HNUK from the outset that the original series cost over $1M an hour to produce in the 1980s and that costs per hour are now considerably more.  In fact it is very difficult to make a two-hour Television movie for under $4.5M nowadays.  I realize that Fandom could in now way raise that sort of money in pledges.

However, the ideas - and the fantastic response, much of which has been forwarded to me - does show that the ideas has its merits.  The greatest concern almost universally voiced was the legality of the idea: the possibility of contravening copyright laws.  As one amusingly described it, "The legal heebeejeebees!"   A secondary concern was, would Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman entertain the idea?

The last first.  Both Linda and Ron are very intelligent actors.  They are both driven by good scripts, the proof of a sound production - and a fine director.  If these matters are addressed satisfactorily, I believe they would consider a revival of 'Beauty and the Beast' as a one-off project.  Linda recently stated on a talk show that, "She wants to be adored!"   I think she knows that she is universally adored by Fandom - a movement that could easily be revitalized.

And so the quagmire of copyright without putting Fandom into "Some very unpleasant legal crosshairs".  Actually it is not such a swamp as some think.  Certainly Ron Koslow is central to the potential success of a newly reconstituted "Beauty and the Beast."   However, it might help if I recount the early stages of the creation of the original pilot.

It was a 1986 news story in one of the New York papers that captured the imagination of the then head of CBS, Kim LeMaster.  The article followed the life of a NY transient and surmised that thousands of people lived in the tunnels and service vents of the city, beneath even the sewers and the subway, without ever seeing the light of day.   Ron was, at that time, fascinated by the power of Jean Cocteau's "Le Belle et la Bête."  The two met - the rest is history.

To the best of my knowledge, "Le Belle et la Bête" - and the Villeneuve fairy-tale it is based on - is in the Public Domain.  The story in the New York newspaper was factual and therefore not copyrighted.  Therefore, we must look to the creation of the Television characters Vincent, Catherine, Father et al and the Money behind the series.

Again, the last first. Although Witt-Thomas Productions may have some underlying rights, CBS does not.  It licensed the show.  Shows can change US networks with impunity: just look at the present dance with "Buffy The Vampire Slayer".

Republic Pictures picked up the deficit financing and therefore probably owns most of the rights.  As you know, Republic was swallowed up by Aaron Spelling Television that, in turn, disappeared into the belly of Viacom.  As someone noted, Viacom probably does not even know they have this property and we can kiss a videotape re-release of the existing series goodbye.    However, it is my belief that they only hold the rights in the existing episodes - and not the concept - and, that being the case, there might be no violation of copyright.  More importantly, the revival of the project into a TV Movie would give their library of original shows a new value.

Therefore, as many of you suggest, an appeal must be made to Ron Koslow as the creator of the elements that are not in the PD.  I am presently in conversation with Lee Holdridge and hope to converse with Ron Koslow soon.  Should an approach have to be made to Witt-Thomas Productions, certainly Tony Thomas is very approachable with a good, sound idea.

There is still a superb group of professionals whom I am sure would join such a project: David Schwartz, Don Avis, Alex Ganza, Howard Gordon, Rick Baker and a host of technicians.

What I suggested in Nottingham was to consider forming a development fund, in order to, as one person put it, "find out who owns what and - with that information - make better decisions on the next steps."   Whether that fund could afford to commission a script, I do not know.  I suspect not.  However, there may be a superb script languishing that only needs 'polish.'  That is what 'development' is all about.  Let us see if Ron Koslow will set a financial target.  Then, rather like the church steeple restoration fund, let us see if Fandom can meet the target.

It is interesting to see how the world turns.  Only last week, there was an article in The New York Times about a new, fascinating insight into... you guessed it... thousands of people in the tunnels and service vents of the city, beneath even the sewers and the subway, without every seeing the light of day!

And every third show on US network television seems to be about a District Attorneys' office.  Perhaps a re-visit to the world of Catherine, Vincent and Father is also on the cards!

With every best wish - Be Well!

Christopher Toyne

Gwen adds to this:-

poen to Vincent at the end of the episode, we do not hear the first 5 lines.
I found the poem, through an almost magical chain of events, several years
later. Here it is. I apologise if you have already included this and I did
not see it.

Thank you.

Maira

Response: Thanks very much Maira. We have included the poem in the poetry section with thanks to yourself, and also a link from the episodes section. And thanks for the compliments - i'm glad you enjoy the site! - Simon

Charity auction: Beauty and the Beast

Hi!
We've been holding contests to give away the audio soundtrack to the TV
series Beauty and The Beast, otherwise known as Of Love and Hope, for about
two years now.
Even though sometimes we've just handed them out, some folks have still
emailed us asking to buy it from us. Maybe they're too shy to enter any of
the contests!
If you or anyone you know is still looking for a copy of this, we have a
cassette up for auction - just click here.
You can also just
press the notice on the upper right hand corner of our front page:

The entire purchase price of the winning bid will go to a charity of the
winner's choice. We'll even pick up the delivery charge!
We hope those who have held back, or tried and missed out before, will take
a chance this time for a good cause.
The online auction is doubling as a dry run for a charity auction we hope
to set up with the kind folks at 4charity.com, a neat site that uses retail
affiliate programs on the Web for public good.

Thanks for your time!

Sincerely yours,
Jennifer Kramer

British fan needs help!

Hi! This is Margaret Zumas here, a past pres. of a BATB fanclub in my area in
Eastern Pa. I received a letter from a British fan who is very ill with
Parkinson's Disease (I believe). This fan is completely unaware of the fandom
that exists in UK and I was wondering if anyone is interested to help out with
this. I have already done what I can to help through her American friend in
CA. I believe a donated tape of Part 3 may be in order. Would anyone care to
help? Please read on. Here is the letter:

6 Dec. 1998

Dear Margaret,

I am writing to let you know how pleased and delighted I was to receive the
photographs of Ron Perlman you kindly sent for me to my friend Mary Nichols in
California.

I have long been an admirer of Perlman. He has a special quality of acting
and a remarkable speaking voice. I have a tope of the film, "The Name of the
Rose."

Parts 1 & 2 of Beauty and the Beast were transmitted here earlier this year
and we have been left with the cliff-hanger of the birth of the baby!

It was promised that the final part 3 would be screened in the Autumn, but our
TV channel 5 now says that although they have the rights to screen the final
Part 3, it is not on schedule at present.

In the meantime, we just watch the programme listings and hope!

Thank you once again for the photographs, I will always treasure them.

With kind regards,

Joyce H. >>>>>>>

I am told by her friend in California that this British fan is EXTREMELY ILL
and is completely unaware of the fandom that exists for the show in the UK.

Response: Thank you very much for your letter, Margaret. Gwen will be writing to Mrs. Howard.

Reply from Luis:
Simon,
First of all thank you very much for your support. (Excuse me but I don't speak english). Your information is very important for this ilusion to find the B&B soundtrack, specially "Of Love and Hope" album. I'm searching this CD from 2 years ago. I wrote to USA fans but without success. I'm a fan with my (today) fiancee from 1989, together shared all beatifull episodies.
I always had a dream : play this music in my wedding day. Now in 1999 this can be reality.
Simon, excuse me but my english vocabulary is short. Only thanks again, you have a new friend from this distant lands. I began a B&B spanish site but by my unexperience about internet only I have a small site. I want to invite you to visit a friend's site Sonia Corral, a excellent site in english-spanish.
Well, I hope that you understand me, I'll try to find the B&B music and I'll write you when I get it.
Bye, Luis.

B&Bmerchandise

Hi all,

Unfortunately, I will be moving in several months to another state and have to
sell all of my B&B merchandise, artwork, stained glass, zines etc. Anyone
interested in purchasing some or all of my treasures can reach me at the
following address:

Janet Dunadee
PO Box 131591
Staten Island, NY 10313-0005

Or e-mailing me

I also have in my possession, original magazine articles re: Ron, Linda, etc.
from People, Entertainment Weekly, etc. I would rather a devoted B&B fan
have all my merchandise instead of throwing it away. Can you help?

Thanks in advance. Be well.
