Revolution Studios sent out a press release stating that filming has begun on Guillermo Del Toro's live-action adaptation of HELLBOY, based on Mike Mignola's comic book. Six-time Academy Award winning makeup effects god Rick Baker has designed the look of Hellboy (being played by Ron Perlman) as well as the film's other creatures and unusual beings like aquatic merman Abe Sapien (played by Doug Jones).
Rounding out the cast are Selma Blair (A GUY THING) playing pyrokinetic and possible Hellboy love interest Liz Sherman; John Hurt (ALIEN) as Hellboy's human father figure and head of the Bureau of Paranormal Research, Dr. Broom; Jeffrey Tambor (NEVER AGAIN) as FBI Agent Tom Manning; Karel Roden (BLADE II) as the evil sorcerer Grigori Rasputin; Victoria Smurfit (ABOUT A BOY) as Nazi henchwoman Ilsa; and newcomer Rupert Evans as FBI Agent Myers, another possible romantic interest for the hot-tempered Liz.
Scheduled for a summer 2004 release, the film is currently filming in Prague and will be released by Columbia Pictures. So far no images of Perlman in the Hellboy makeup have leaked out. The Development Heck listing for HELLBOY will be shortly updated to reflect this latest change to the project.
