Del Toro Working Hellboy
Guillermo del Toro, director of the upcoming feature-film
adaptation of the Hellboy comic series, told SCI FI Wire that he is
deep into special-effects preparation. "We're on the fifth week of
designing the film," the director said in an interview. "I'm going
to go into a meeting with the special-effects guys and work on the clay
maquettes [three-dimensional concept sculptures]. That's the stage we're at.
We're locking up the monsters."
Hellboy will star Ron Perlman as the giant-fisted
comic-book superhero created by Mike Mignola. A longtime fan of the comics,
del Toro said that he would use the comics as inspiration, but would not base
the film's images directly on the comics. "We're using it as a bible, as
a reference for the colors and the textures of the movie, but not as a
storyboard," he said. Hellboy is in preproduction for Revolution
Studios.
Also from Sci-Fi Wire:
The official Dark Horse Hellboy Web site has
posted an image of a teaser poster for the
upcoming movie version of Mike Mignola's comic series. The publisher will
distribute 2004 copies of the poster (referring to the year of the film's
anticipated release) at the Comic-Con International in San Diego on Aug. 1.

and is a drawing of Ron Perlman as Hellboy. It's quite dramatic...and
obviously a HEAVY makeup role. Sigh. Poor Ron.

News from the Roy Dotrice Fan Association...
EBENEZER HEADS TO WEST END
by Peter Pannett
The book of Ebenezer Le Page could become a West End hit for Guernsey actor Roy
Dotrice.
He is starring in an adaptation of the G.B.Edwards novel at the Theatre Royal,
Lincoln, in September, as a precursor to a London opening.
"I would have loved to bring it to Guernsey after Lincoln, but I just
couldn't find anywhere to put it on, everywhere in the island was booked,"
he said.
"So I've had to postpone a Guernsey appearance until next year."
Mr Dotrice said that there would be just two characters in the dramatization -
Ebenezer and the love of his life, Mea Queripol.
"His love was unconsummated." said Mr Dotrice.
"There's been quite a bit of interest already," he said from his home
in the middle of London's theatreland, mentioning Andrew Lloyd-Webber and a
Broadway producer.
"As Mr Lloyd-Webber owns about a dozen West End theatres, we should find
somewhere to put it on."
The play goes into rehearsal in August and its director, Anthony Williamson,
said that to complete the local connection, the tune of Sarnia Cherie would be
used.
"We have a very good musical arranger who's going to use the theme
throughout the play and set it to reflect the different moods."
- Mr Dotrice was born in Guernsey in 1925 and formed and directed the
Guernsey Theatre Company in 1955.
- The Book of Enebenzer Le Page by G.B.Edwards, with a foreword by John
Fowles, was published in 1931.
- Mr Dotrice read the book on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour and was voted
by the listeners as the best fiction the programme had ever presented.
- The book was adapted by Joyce Cook and presented by Gadoc twice, the
last time in 1996.
- Mr Dotrice holds the world record for the longest-running solo stage
performance when he appeared 400 times as the diarist, John Aubery, in 1965
and 1969. He reprised the role in London in 1974 with 150 performances and
played the role on Broadway and around the world, with a further 1,400
performances.
