| NAN DIBBLE'S HOTLINE UPDATE - 12th August 2001 |
This is the news for July 29 from Nan Dibble and Helpers' Network Hotline for
fans of Beauty and the Beast. To contact me by e-mail, post to ndibble@fuse.net.
To stop (or to begin) receiving updates as e-mail, notify me at the above e-mail
address. To reach me by phone (evenings/weekends), call (513) 961-4813.The
Helpers’ Network website is at http://home.fuse.net/helpnet.
Sorry about missing last week's update. Had some computer downage, happily now corrected. It's always something….
I stand corrected in regard to the organizers of the LA convention (for 2003) as I announced in the last update: I had wrongly assumed the same folk responsible for the previous LA cons were those organizing the new one. Helper Lisa Howard Bock informs me firmly that tain't so. When the organizers of that con identify themselves to me and let me know what URL fans can go to, to get news about the convention, I'll be glad to pass that information along. Sorry for any confusion my incorrect assumption may have caused. So it's NOT any kind of A Distant Shore, I imagine. That ConCom will have to come up with whole new name, to distinguish it from the others--on the whole, a happy prospect, given the wealth of imagery the series has given us.
On the topic of corrections, I share with you the oops corrections of Helper
Ginger Janssen, who in the last update gave some links to post-convention
information and pictures.
One of them was:
http://community.webshots.com/album/17868912GVgZHLmhti
Susan Howe of BBTV & CABB_Connections shares pictures. Oops--they're Jan
Sutter's!
Ginger also mentioned that the BBTV list was down. It's apparently UP again,
and reports of its downage were only slightly exaggerated and temporary.
You are fully absolved, Ginger, of passing along incorrect information. I've
done far worse and either the voodoo dolls don't work or nobody
was all that seriously annoyed. I appreciate the correction, however. Saves
headaches all around, as it were.
I hope that events prove me wrong, but in examining the slowly growing program lineup of what's now the Hallmark Channel and formerly was the Odyssey channel, on their website, I don't find any episodes of Beauty and the Beast in their weekly schedule of offerings. Other programs occupy that 1 a Sunday latenight slot. Hallmark is, as announced, holding a B&B marathon 8/28-9/8, 2-4 p ET/PT, so the series is still among their holdings--that is, they still have the right to air it, probably at least through the end of this year if not beyond. Let us encourage them to do so. On their website (which is STILL http://odysseyonline.com), as before, one can send them e-mail. Let's all take a moment this week to post to them regrets that B&B was no longer to be found in their regular weekly schedule and to hope that the series will return soon to a regular airing of episodes, week by week.
In miscellaneous news, I've heard from Jena Halford (formerly Ondrechen),
author of the never-published B&B Complete Guidebook, a wonderful discussion
of the series that I hope will be published somewhere, someday. As a cancer
survivor, fine writer, and all-around fine B&B person, Jena's happiness and
doings are of general interest to the fandom, I think, so I include some of the
information from her post:
Jena says, "My main news was the publication of the "Swords &
Circuitry" book [Jana sent me some information on this book on role-playing
games; it's too long for the e-mailed update, so I've posted it in the update on
the Helpers' Network website for those interested--Nan]. Health-wise I am doing
pretty well. I just had some minor surgery/biopsy work, but everything went fine
so I can plan on keeping my hair until further notice. And Neal and I
continue to be so happy we make some people sick. : ) I have a pr/marketing job
and do volunteer work for a local AIDS/HIV service provider. (I edit their
newsletter and run an annual school supply drive for the children the
organization serves. Neal helps me a lot.)"
Good to hear things are going well with you, Jena, even if the $$$ remain in
short supply from time to time (I wouldn't know about that myself…I
also lie a lot).
Helper Tom Witt tell us, "If you get on Yahoo, click on
"News", and then type Linda Hamilton into the "News Search,"
you'll find an article describing Linda's participation in a charitable event in
Malibu. Actor James Woods convinced Linda and several other celebrities to have
their hair cut at $25 each to raise money for Parkinson's Disease
research." And in another post, Tom says that "If you go to the
"News " section of the Linda Hamilton Online Website [http:\\www.lhow.com]
], they are having a contest where you can win a DVD copy of Linda's new film,
"Skeletons in the Closet," that is signed by the director of the film,
Wayne Powers. The contest runs through November." He also notes that the
fantastic makeup in the new Planet of the Apes movie was done by Rick Baker,
originator of the never-to-be-sufficiently admired Vincent makeup.
Thanks, Tom!
Helper Holly Day offers help to anyone who's had trouble downloading ANY version of my two novelizations (Bright Spirit Descending & Beyond Words, Beyond Silence). She's obviously more computer-literate than I--she created a "patch" that let her download them in .htms format. If you'd like her assistance, post her at hollyday@sprhill.net.
Helper and all-around nice person Jamie Murray (who's no longer to be Myhr for us, alas!) sent a news note about actor Nigel Bennett (familiar to fans of Forever Knight and Lexx): "From the Nigel Bennett Fanclub mailing list--Nigel will star as the Beast in the Neptune Theatre Production of Beauty and the Beast this winter. Click on the What's New Link [on your browser, presumably] for more information." Always good to hear from Jamie, whom we always wish well in his increasingly busy creative professional life.
From Sally Newman, fondly known in the fandom as "The Quilt Lady" and proprietor of Father's Fan Fare, relaying news she had from noted fan writer Linda Mooney, that some of Linda's art collection, including work by Barb Gipson, is to be auctioned off on eBay, one piece at a time. If you're interested, check http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1175700352." This URL should be current for the picture now on sale; however, if it doesn't take you to Linda's new piece of artwork, try searching Beauty and the Beast (on eBay) and whatever piece of Fan Original Artwork is currently up for auction should be listed.
Fine fan artist Sandy Chandler Shelton passed along a couple of welcome news
items:
1. Lyn Musacchio's website for the 2002 convention is at http://www.dreamthedream.org
2. I have B&B calendars for 2002 available for $15. This INCLUDES the
postage for US. Overseas cost: $20

I assume Chandler gives ordering info for the calendar on her "artpage;"
or you can e-mail her for details at either of her e-mail addresses given above.
If she sends me more complete ordering information (including address), I'll be
glad to pass it along.
On the con just past, ConCom chair Aurea Andino sends this news:
Yes, there is Con merchandise available, very sexy stuff. Please direct all
inquiries to deb5ca@yahoo.com, who is
coordinating sales.
Folks getting refunds can expect to have checks on the way by mid August when we
complete our audit. Your patience is appreciated.
Please post this notice hither and yon.
Thanks,
Aurea
Helper Janet Knights kindly shares with us a meeting with the elusive (and
still busy) Armin Shimerman (Pascal):
"I thought you'd like to know I had a chance to meet Armin Shimerman at the
Trek Con in Toronto, Ontario. During his speech he was asked about
his time on Beauty and the Beast...he went very quiet and then talked of how
much he'd learned as an actor on the show, especially from Ron Perlman, whom he
referred to as a 'great actor'. Armin seemed quite sentimental about the
whole thing and it was nice to see those times were not forgotten in the grand
spectacle of Star Trek. He also mentioned that he'd called Ron after
getting the part of Quark, to see how Ron dealt with all that makeup.
Ron's response?, with Armin doing his best Vincent imitation, "Think of the
money"!
Janet Knights
Ontario, Canada"
Thanks, Janet!
I also had items on Mag 7 from Judy Adams and an update from Simon Huggins on the HNUK site, but this post is becoming unwieldy already, and I'll defer them until the next update.

If it's news and has to do with Beauty and the Beast, please think of the
Hotline and relay. We're all in this together keeping the dream of Beauty and
the Beast alive however we can. Beast wishes, be well, and goodbye.
