This is the news for July 16 from Nan Dibble and Helpers' Network Hotline for fans of Beauty and the Beast. To contact me by e-mail, post to ndibble@fuse.net. To stop (or to begin) receiving updates as e-mail, notify me at the above e-mail address. To reach me by phone (evenings/weekends), call (513) 961-4813.The Helpers’ Network website is at http://home.fuse.net/helpnet.

Here are a couple of items from Helper JoAnn Baca:

The URL for the new site location for the Beauty and the Beast Reading Chamber is:

http://jsd119.tripod.com/index.html

The consolidated Q-fer, so long promised and now available, is at:

http://jsd119.tripod.com/qfer/index.html

Jackie Newman, who runs the BBRC, wants to remind writers in our fandom that she is happy to post out-of-print or new fanfic on BBRC. Contact her at the e-mail address listed on the BBRC website for more information.

The Q-fer [Helpers’ Network Quality Fanzine ReviewNan], while now available to the public, is still a work in progress. Jackie and I have, with Nan's permission and blessing, taken information from past Q-fers and consolidated them into one edited database, keeping listings shorter and in line with a "just the facts" policy. We have also added zines as we have found them, to make this the most inclusive database we can. We will strive to have the most accurate information possible on the site. As we have more time and information, the site will be updated, and any assistance which fans can provide (additional zines to list, better information on those already listed) will be gratefully appreciated. We'd also like to thank those authors and editors who contributed information about the availability of their zines.

Jackie and I hope that the site will be useful to fans and we again express our appreciation to Nan for allowing us to take on this project.

JoAnn Baca

[Nan again. I accept the appreciation and return admiration: this was quite a giant undertaking, given dozens of Q-fers and the task of integrating and editing the entries. For newbies, the Q-fer was published for about five yearsat first quarterly, then biannuallyand contained reviews and ordering information for nearly all of the thousands of fanzines concerning Beauty and the Beast published anywhere. The bulk of the reviews were by me and were as objective as it was possible to make them, given that analyzing fiction is my trade (12+ years teaching College English and Creative Writing) and held zines to no standard other than that which had already been established by fan fiction in this fandom. I am flabbergasted that JoAnn and Jackie took on the chore of making one integrated Q-fer available online and only hope it still will be of service to the fandom in determining their wish lists of zines. Though many are now out of print, many are available from collections being sold, etc., so favorite zines do materialize from time to time….]

Here’s something I picked up from the Sci-Fi Wire, 7/12/01

The Upcoming Movies Web site reported that New Line has set a March 22, 2002, release date for its upcoming vampire movie Blade 2, the sequel to 1998's hit Blade, which was based on the Marvel Comics series Blade the Vampire Hunter.

(Ron Perlman has a role in that as one of the “Blood Pack…”)

Simon Huggins, the Webmaster of the Helpers Network UK site, reports trouble:

Dear All,

Apologies! There have been a few problems following the last update - namely that the site was unavailable for one day due to a problem with uploading, and also that the search engine was off-line after it was updated for some reason - again, this is OK now.

If anybody finds any other problem, please let me know.

Many thanks,

Simon Huggins
HNUK Webmaster

Also troubleshooting is photographer Albert Ortega, who realized he’d given the wrong URL when inviting people to visit his new website. The corrected URL is:

http://www.ez-entertainment.net/ortega.html

Further, the way to sign his guestbook isn't obvious, as I found when I visited his home page. He tells me that clicking on "Home," on that web page (as opposed to your browser), will take you to his guestbook, if you'd care to say "Hi!"

Finally, two small items. I noticed that the music for Jurassic Park III, which premieres on Wednesday, is by Don Davis, who wrote the background scores for Beauty and the Beast throughout the series. And A Storm of Swords, the third book of George R. R. Martin's fantasy series, has been in the top ten of the best-selling sci-fi/fantasy lists for about 6 weeks now, so it's obviously doing well. George was the author of several episodes of B&B.

If it's news and has to do with Beauty and the Beast, please think of the Hotline and relay. We're all in this together keeping the dream of Beauty and the Beast alive however we can. Beast wishes, be well, and goodbye.
