As an item of general interest, writer Barbara Hambly, who did two of the
B&B pro paperback novelizations, has a new book out in her Benjamin January
mystery series (5, so far). This one is entitled “Die upon a Kiss,” and
it’s available as of June 19. Per the notice from Amazon.com, “Freed slave
Benjamin January returns in this fifth entry in Barbara Hambly's engrossing
series set in 1830s New Orleans. This time out, January joins the orchestra of
the city's top opera house, only to become embroiled in a web of murderous
passions, greed, and racial hatred. As ever, Hambly's period detail is
pitch-perfect.”
I met Ms. Hambly at the LA con and found her frank, funny, and friendly. I’ve
enjoyed much of her work--particularly her vampire stories--since then. So I
thought some of you might be interested in her continuing writing career.
Here’s a notice from JoAnn Baca, the Dealer's room manager for the NYC CON:
The Beauty and the Beast convention being held in New York City (July 13-15)
will have an *orphan zine* table in the dealers room. It’s actually going to
be an *anything Beauty and the Beast* table. So...those of you who have one
item, a few items, or many items (zines, photos, bookmarks, stationery, posters,
calendars, artwork, videos, pewter figures, tee shirts, OLAH CDs...you get the
idea!) and want to sell them, the Con Committee wants to help you do just that!
For a 15 percent commission (with funds going to the con charity), the Con
Committee will sell your items for you.
Here’s what to do: contact me (joannb7@yahoo.com)
and we'll work out where/how to send your items. If you have only a few items,
it would probably be best to send them to me to consolidate with other items to
be sold; if you have very heavy items or more than one boxful, we'll arrange for
you to send them directly to the hotel; if you are located in NYC, it may be
possible to drop off the items at the convention on the Tuesday, Wednesday or
Thursday before the con to avoid shipping costs.
To help the Con Committee sell your items, please do the following:
1. Each item to be sold should have a well-affixed label/peel-off sticker with
your last name and the price you’re asking on it. This is essential, as we'll
have items from many people on the table and we need to ensure we credit sales
to the appropriate person. (Please don’t use Post-its or paperclips - they
come off too easily.)
2. Please enclose an inventory list of the items you are sending and the prices;
the list should also include your name, address, phone number and/or e-mail
address. (Please don’t just list *ten zines* - list titles. Again, this
will help us credit sales properly.)
3. Please send to me (either by e-mail or snail-mail) a copy of that inventory
list, so I can be sure we have enough space for all items sent and some idea of
what to expect when I open your boxes. Also, please indicate to me if you are
willing to negotiate on prices, and what flexibility the Con Committee may have
to, for instance, discount items which are not selling well.
4. Please advise me whether you want to donate unsold items to the next con or
if you want your unsold items to be mailed back to you (if the latter, you'll be
responsible for shipping costs). And, if you want to donate the items to THIS
con, with all monies going to the charity, we'll gladly accept your items for
that purpose! In that case, your inventory sheet will serve as a donation
notice, and you'll get confirmation of your donation from the Con Committee for
tax purposes.
If you are attending the convention, we'll make arrangements to meet on Sunday
afternoon to get your money to you; if you are not in attendance, your funds
will be sent to you after the con.
Please think about the newbies and those from around the world attending the con
who may not have had access to the many wonderful fan-produced and *authorized*
Beauty and the Beast products which have been sold over the years. If you have
an *extra* something, now is the time to make another fan’s day and make a
little money while doing it!
If you have any questions, let me know!

Here are the Sightings through Sunday, June 24. Helper/Correspondent Maxine
Mayer is in mid-move and has taken a well-deserved break from doing the
Sightings until she’s settled in the new place. So anything missed is entirely
my fault. I gather I got a week ahead of myself in listing what episode is
airing on Odyssey; I hope I’ve got it right now.
