| NAN DIBBLE'S HOTLINE UPDATE - 15th April 2001 |
This is the news for April 15 from Nan Dibble and Helpers' Network Hotline
for fans of Beauty and the Beast. To contact me by e-mail, post to
ndibble@fuse.net To stop (or to begin) receiving updates as e-mail,
notify
me at the above e-mail address. To reach me by phone (evenings/weekends),
call (513) 961-4813.The Helpers' Network website is at
http://home.fuse.net/helpnet
Last week was difficult. Trust me-you don't want to know. Although lacking
an update, this week DID mark a milestone-the Helpers' Network website
reached and passed a quarter million total "hits." So I guess we're all
still alive and well as a fandom!
Here's an update from Helper/Correspondent Darlene Sullivan:
Kate (Katy) Boyer (Lena in "God Bless the Child") has joined the cast of
"Minority Report" for director Steven Spielberg. She will play a mom.
Miss Boyer had a role in Spielberg's "The Lost World: Jurassic Park."
Ron Perlman's animated film, "Titan A.E.," [Ron did a voice-Nan] earned
the
Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing in Animated Feature Film at the
48th Annual Motion Picture Sound Editing awards dinner in March.
The uncertainty over a possible Writers Guild of America strike may
conflict with the start of filming on Mr. Perlman's next movie, the drama
"G.S.P.O.T.," which is to begin on May 17 in Los Angeles. Andrew Kavovit,
who starred with Mr. Perlman in the TV series, "The Magnificent Seven," is
in the cast. The production credits list Andrew Kavovit and Steven Kavovit
as the producers; Andrew Kavovit as director; and script written by Andrew
Kavovit, Steven Kavovit, Jennifer Dodson and Conner Vander.
The possible WGA strike has thrown the production schedule for "Terminator
3" into doubt. Speaking at the opening of Universal Studios Japan theme
park, Arnold Schwarzenegger said the script is in the process of being
finished and depending on the scriptwriters' strike, then preproduction
can
begin. He is hopeful the film will be out in 2002 and said, "I know only
one thing for certain: who'll play the "Terminator."
"Beauty and the Beast" reruns on the Odyssey Channel may be affected by a
change in ownership of Odyssey. On March 28, executives at Hallmark Cards,
Inc. and Crown Media Holdings, Inc. announced that effective August 6, The
Odyssey Network will be renamed the Hallmark Channel.
Odyssey's founder and co-owner, The National Interfaith Cable Coalition,
recently joined with Crown Media which now owns 100% of Odyssey. The
announcement was combined with the unveiling of a multi-million dollar
branding and marketing campaign to propel original series, miniseries and
six to eight original movies a year. A fan e-mail campaign to Odyssey now
could alert the new Hallmark owner that "Beauty and the Beast" has a large
and loyal fan base that will follow the series to the new Hallmark
network.

Nan again. I heartily second Darlene's suggestion that you send a post to
Odyssey supporting the airing of the series there. At their website, you
can call up a "feedback" form that e-mails them your comments. It's at
http://www.odysseychannel.com/network/index.html
-the part of the website
called "Community Connection." Spread the word around!
Sandie Dapoz says that she is smiling widely because she found interested
buyers for her closet-bulging B&B collection. Sandie adds, "I am going to
move any remaining items to eBay for a week and then will donate any
remaining zines to one of the Beastly lending libraries that are around--
a
service that I am very glad is out there!" Sandie is also smiling because
Helpers came forth with contact information for Pam Tuck!!! Thanks to
those
who responded to Sandie's request for contact info.
Because of the delay in updates, part of the following notice from Conzine
Chair Cathy Moran is past the deadline; but part of it isn't, so I relay
it:
Just a reminder that the deadline for conzine submissions is less than a
week away. April 12 is the day I will accept stories/poetry for the 2001
conzine. I will, however, continue to accept submissions for artwork until
the end of April. If you've ever given any kind of thought at trying your
hand at drawing, now is the time to do it.
Remember, you can find the conzine guidelines at the web site for Once
Upon
A Time at www.onceuponatimeinnyc.org/con2001.html
, or you can email me at
CatM412@home.com
Nan again. This is a new URL for convention information. I've updated my
links to it accordingly.
Helen Commodore announces a new zine:
I'm not sure if you remember me but...here I am, one of the batb original
fans. I just finished a new zine and while e-mailing Lesley Burton, she
suggested I notify you so that you might post the info. I've attached the
flyer and would appreciate whatever you can do to spread the word. Thanks
so much. If there's anything else you need, please let me know. Again,
thanks and have a lovely Easter. I'll see you at the con, this year it's
almost right around the corner from Brooklyn!

Speaking of the con, here's an update from ConCom member Diane Kenney:
News and Updates about "Once Upon a Time in NYC: A Homecoming" (aka the
2001 Con)
1) Hotel Rooms: At this time, the con-block at the Holiday Inn-Midtown is
sold out for Saturday, July 14th. However, the Holiday Inn *itself* is not
sold out. The con committee recommends that you make a reservation at the
regular rate if you plan to come to the con, then watch the webpage, and
various info-sources for more information, OR call the hotel on Monday or
Tuesday as the con committee will be trying to extend the block. You can
make reservations directly with the Holiday Inn (Webpage is:
http://www.basshotels.com/holiday-inn?_franchisee=NYCUP
) or via
Travelocity ( www.travelocity.com ) or Expedia
( www.expedia.com ). You can
also try discounters such as PriceLine ( www.priceline.com
). The standard
rate is $199 / night. The "great rate" of $179/night is listed on all the
above-referenced sites, and has no charges for extra people, but the hotel
will charge for extra beds. These rates do not include taxes and/or
surcharges. The telephone number for the hotel is: 1-212-581-8100 OR,
Toll-Free: 800-231-0405.
2) ConZine: The deadline is fast approaching. Please have your submissions
emailed to CathyM (CatM412@home.com ) by April 12th. (Guidelines can be
found under the PARTICIPANTS section of the con website:
http://www.onceuponatimeinnyc.org/ or you can email Cathy directly.) Cathy
has stated that people submitting ARTWORK for the ConZine may have until
the end of April, but no longer.
3) Celebrities: David Schwartz is officially coming. (announced 4/7/01).
4) Talent Show? Dealers Room? Art Show? These Registrations are all still
open. Guidelines are under the PARTICIPANTS section of the con webpage.
(We're asking you to *please* pre-register for the Costume Contest and
Talent Show this year.)
And on a different con front, this in from the UK fandom, specifically
Amber James:
Amber says:
I'm working flat out with Christopher Toyne to try to raise awareness of
our changes to the charity Auction, and to raise support. Could you please
use the information below to post something on the Helpers Network site?
There can be very few people who are unaware of the current crisis facing
the farming industry in the UK. There are well over 1,000 infected farms
and over 2 million animals have been, or are to be destroyed.
Farmers are in the most dire straits, in most cases not even qualifying
for
state benefits to see them through this situation. Apart from the
heartbreaking loss of their animals, income and work possibilities, many
are unable to feed their families and the few unaffected breeds of animals
they have left. There have been suicides as the pressure becomes
impossible
to bear.
Because of this, we have decided to split the money raised at our Charity
Auction between Family First, our adopted charity, and the Royal
Agricultural Benevolent Institute (RABI).
Information on the help these charities give can be found at the
convention
website.
http://www.classic.themes.btinternet.co.uk/BandB/events/AMIT/index.html
At this same site, we have listed 'special' items we have for the auction,
some very rare items indeed, and not just Beauty And The Beast, but other
fandom merchandise such as Star Trek and Buffy.
Bids can be made on site. Checks should be made payable to The Beauty and
the Beast Convention Fund.
Please take a look at the site, and make a bid there for anything you feel
you would like. Remember: what you bid for a fanzine could put food in
someone's mouth, go towards keeping a roof over their head, or assist a
family in need.
Be Well
