News in from a new correspondent: Kay Fleitz, who's involved in the fandom
of Gabriel Byrne, Roy's companion in the new series (coming this fall)
Madigan Men.

Kay says:

Could you please get this information out for Roy Dotrice's fans?

If you will be in the NY area and would like tickets for Gabriel
Byrne's/Roy Dotrice's upcoming sitcom Madigan Men, please call (212)
539-3070 or e-mail Dana Kenerson at dana@audiencesunlimited.com. You can
also go to http://www.tvtickets.com and if the episode you wish to see is
already listed, you can order and print out tickets immediately. If you go
through Dana it will take a little longer since he must have the tickets
printed and sent to you but if you have any questions about tickets or want
to order tickets for later shows, Dana is the one to contact. If you live
in the NY area, please try to attend one of the early episode tapings. They
want to make sure those fill up.

The promo I received stated that you must be 18 or older to attend a MM
taping since the producers are targeting an adult audience.

Madigan Men will be shot at the Kaufman-Astoria Studios.  The schedule is:
Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 29
Oct. 6, 13 and 27
Nov. 3, 9 and 17
Dec. 1 and 8
All of the shows will be taped on Fridays with the except of Nov. 9, which
is a Thursday.
Audience arrival time is 6 p.m. Show time is 7 p.m.

The first episode of Madigan Men will air Oct. 6.

If you have any questions, please e-mail Dana or you can write me at
starmotherkay@hotmail.com and I will make sure Dana gets your questions.

Thank you so much for getting the word out to Roy's fans.

Bright Wishes, Kay Fleitz

Nan again. Although the Helpers' Network updates go to most of those I know
who are Roy's particular fans, I'm sure there are others who neither get
the updates nor know of the HN website. If you know any such, especially
any who maintain any sort of website for Roy, please do contact Kay with
the information so she can add them to HER update postings, which she's
promised to send to me (among others).

For instance, here are her remarks on Roy in response to my account of him
at the July LA B&B con:

I confess I never put Roy's name to a face until one of our NY gals sent me
a playbill from MOON and than I almost fainted. I'd sent a couple of
e-mails to RD at the theatre. Than I realized who he was and started
looking up info at imdb and telling our gals. As soon as I realized his
birthday was two weeks after Gabriel's (we'd designed and sent via a gal in
NY a special card for Gabriel) birthday. There was no time to specially
make a card so I bought a couple of pretty ones, found out who wanted their
names listed and got them into the mail. One of our other ladies was
backstage on May 26 visiting Cherry Jones (whom she'd worked with some
years ago) and Cherry got Roy to come into her dressing room and everyone
sang Happy Birthday to him. Mc said he looked embarrassed but was grinning
anyway. He had an arm load of presents and cards. And another of our gals
had seen him at a Barnes and Noble with Cherry doing a promo for a new bio
on O'Neill a couple of days prior. She talked to him for a moment and said
he looked floored when she wished him a Happy Birthday. Although she
belongs to our GB group, this gal says she's come to adore Roy because
anytime she's seen him he has been wonderful to the fans. (Shed been to
twice and the rehearsal of the Madigan Men pilot. BTW, she says he steals
the show in MM.)

You would've gotten such a kick out of our group with the awards shows. My
memory fails me at the moment. Either OCC, Desk Awards or Desk Critics.
Anyway, the two that were broadcast in NY where Roy won. Most of us
couldn't see or hear the shows so people in NY would post on the board who
won in which categories as they heard. Everyone went bonkers when Papa Roy
(as we call him) won. And we all cried like idiots when he won his Tony. I
told him in one of the cards that we'd "adopted" him into our Gabriel Byrne
family.

We'd heard that he enjoys going to the B & B conventions. Even as busy as
he is, he doesn't forget his fans. Just another reason he has become so
dear to us.

Nan again. We'll continue to look forward to Kay's lively updates.

News of another B&B person surfaced on the Sci-Fi Wire news site:

12:00pm ET, 4-August-00

Bomb Scare Clears Trek Con

Police evacuated the Philadelphia venue of a Star Trek convention for about
an hour July 29 because of a bomb scare, according to the official Star
Trek Continuum Web site.

The convention went on outside the Adam's Mark Hotel as police determined
that the suspected bomb was just a box full of clocks intended for the
nearby Republican National Convention's Illinois delegates, who were
staying in the hotel, the site reported.

Star Trek stunt performers Leslie Hoffman and Brian Williams demonstrated
bat'leth fighting on the hotel lawn while news helicopters hovered
overhead. Star Trek: Deep Space 9 star Armin Shimerman and Star Trek:
Voyager star Robert Duncan McNeill signed autographs and had their pictures
taken with fans under the sun.

This from Marina Broers, who lives in BELGIUM, BELGIUM, BELGIUM! (I got it
wrong, last time), and responded to my invitation to anyone with con photos
to identify their website:

Marina says (while giggling about my oops):

Hi everyone,

Just to inform you that I have received some wonderful pictures from PatK
(Thank you!!!!!) ... 2 from Ron/Roy and many from the Beauty and the Beast
Costumes, The carousel, and 2 from Janice while reading her wonderful poem

to list/link them, too, in the con gallery on the Helpers' Network website.

Next, pro writer and fan Pat Jackson shares with us her article about Roy
Dotrice, suggesting it be used as a template for how such articles are
done, and suggesting that those interested modify the content to themselves
and submit it to local newspapers, etc., in their area. Pat sent it to me
in HTML format; I retain some of the signs (like the italics) which don't
reproduce well in e-mail. Hope that doesn't make it confusing for anyone.

Here's Pat's instructions, and then her article.
_______________
First, my cover letter to the editor (although I encourage fans to make
appointments to hand this to someone directly, so as to develop
relationships with newspaper people for future articles):

[one inch margins, double space the article after the title. Use Courier
New 12 or Times New Roman 12, left justified. Substitute the local fan's
name and contact info, and change the quotes as desired, giving the local
fan as the source.]

I'm enclosing an article on my recent encounter with Tony-award-winner Roy
Dotrice. It's not every day that a local citizen has such an opportunity.
It also shows the enduring impact of a beloved television series, Beauty
and the Beast. Thus it should interest your readers

I'm attaching three photos:

* Dotrice in his award-winning role in <EM>A Moon for the Misbegotten,</EM>
which I got off of a website (which said the photos were copyright ©2000
Eric Y.), but you could get it from AP or whichever, if you choose to have
more than one photo accompany the article;

* a stock photo of him as Father, which was originally from Republic
Pictures (I can track down the photographer's name, if you wish to use the
photo); and * Dotrice and me taken at the Burbank convention.

Sincerely,
____________
Secondly, the article:
Name
Address
Phone number during the day
Eddress and/or fax number
(skip down about 3 inches)

Tony Award Winner Meets with <I>Beauty and the Beast</I> Fans

Burbank, CA -- Tony Award winner Roy Dotrice flew here specially to
meet with the fans of the <I>Beauty and the Beast</I> TV series. Pat
Jackson of La Marque was among the fans from the United States and Europe
who recently met here for their Eleventh Annual International Convention.
Dotrice played Father, the reclusive foster father of Vincent, the
man-beast, in the 1987-1990 series on CBS. The modernized romantic story
concerned Catherine (Linda Hamilton), the Beauty, a socialite
crime-fighting lawyer in New York City, and the noble Shakespeare-quoting
Vincent (Ron Perlman), living in a tunnel community below the city.
"The fans loved Mr. Dotrice's nuanced portrayal of a concerned father
of such a unique being, and of the beloved leader of the tunnel community,"
Jackson said.
The series quickly developed an international fandom not seen since
that for <I>Star Trek</I>. The critically acclaimed series also garnered
eight Emmys.
Earlier this year, the British actor achieved a grand slam on
Broadway for his role as Phil Hogan, the drunken pig-farmer father in
Eugene O'Neill's <I>A Moon for the Misbegotten</I>. The Drama Desk Awards,
the Outer Critics' Circle, and the American Theater Wing's Tony Awards
voted him the Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play.
Between <I>Beauty and the Beast</I> and his Broadway triumph, Dotrice
has starred in the series <I>Going to Extremes</I>, and had a recurring
role in <I>Picket Fences</I>, and significant roles in <I>The Cutting
Edge</I> and <I>The Scarlet Letter</I>. He also narrated the audiotapes of
Disney's version of <I>Beauty and the Beast</I> and <I>The Prince and the
Pauper</I>. This fall, he will co-star as the Scottish father of his
<I>Misbegotten</I> co-star Gabriel Byrne in ABC's comedy <I>The Madigan
Men</I>
The British actor has attended several of the International <I>Beauty
and the Beast</I> conventions. "At the one in Austin," Jackson recalled,
"many of us gathered around him in the hotel lounge as he read poetry, both
Shakespearean and that composed by fans. He got teary-voiced when he read
one concerning Father."
Dotrice had not been expected at the Burbank convention, but surprised
the fans by stepping in unannounced during the banquet. The excitement had
begun dying down when he brought in Ron Perlman, also unexpected. The fans
support a charity at each convention. So they eagerly acquiesced at making
additional donations to the San Diego Area Chapter of The National Multiple
Sclerosis Society to have their pictures taken with each actor.
<I>Beauty and the Beast </I>fans have raised well over $100,000 for
charities such as pediatric AIDS, women's shelters, and the MS Society.
"The show underlined that Helpers aided those less fortunate," said
Jackson. "We've carried that over into our lives, both at our conventions,
and in our communities."
Other guests at the Burbank convention included Edward Albert (Elliott
Burch), David Greenlee (Mouse), Jay Acovone (Joe Maxwell), Lee Holdridge
(composer), and Margaret Beserra (makeup artist who made Perlman over into
Vincent).
The next convention will take place in New York City in July, 2001.
Reruns of the series air on the Odyssey channel at 12 Midnight CDT
weekdays, 10 P.M. Sundays.

For further information, call Pat Jackson at 935-3125, email
PatJack1@Worldshare.net, or link to many web and chat sites through <A
href="http://home.fuse.net/helpnet">http://home.fuse.net/helpnet</A>.

Jackson wrote <I>The Sublime Myth: Ron Koslow's Beauty and the Beast</I>.
This book-length critique of what she terms "a magnificent story only half
told during the series" received critical acclaim. Perlman felt it is "a
very interesting view." Dotrice also showed interest.

Some miscellaneous news, with thanks to each Helper who forwarded the item.

From Thomas Witt:
In the news section of the Linda Hamilton Online website, it said that on
August 29, Terminator 2 The Ultimate Edition is coming out on DVD. Between
the actual film, unused footage, theatrical trailers and all sorts of other
material, the DVD is 6 hours (!) long. Just thought you might want to know.

From Helper Judy Adams:

Now, a request from Rita Rose Davies in (I think) Wales, Great Britain:

Says Rita:

I am the Editor of Chatterbox, a B&B Letterzine, and The British Beauty and
the Beast Fan Club's Newsletter. I am desperately in need of input for both
Newsletter and Letterzine. If anyone can help with short stories, poems,
artwork, Wordsearch, Trivia games and letters about what B&B did for you
and how you are still keeping the dream alive. A complimentary issue would
be sent to anyone contributing. I must stress however that any letter sent
must be more than half of an A4 size piece of paper. My next issues go out
November so cut off date is October 10th.  Thank you so much.

In Friendship,
Rita Davies

rita@b-and-b-chatterbox.freeserve.co.uk
or  cavernrose@netscapeonline.co.uk

Nan again. If you have materials to submit, I suggest you e-mail Rita to
get her land address. However, I assume she can handle both e-mailed
submissions and attachments in a vanilla flavor of Word, or an attached
.txt file, so don't let the lack of a land address slow you down. Too many
fine letterzines and newsletters have folded over the years for lack of
input. Please do what you can to support Rita's lively and well-regarded
publications.
