This will be the last update until July 16, in the absence of breaking news
from the end of the convention to the following Sunday. If anybody would
like to post me their convention diary, or even scanned photos, I'd be
delighted to display any that are made available to me.

Thanks for all the good wishes sent me during my recent (and MUCH disliked)
illness. I'm fairly functional now, and hope to be better yet, but these
things sneak up on one, don't they? As you all know, I try not to intrude
personal matters in the updates--that's not what they're for--but when the
personal stuff starts interfering with the timely updating of the news, I
think an explanation is owed. And as Father says, "We're all a part of one
another." Sometimes the fandom makes me specially aware of that in the most
consoling, fuzzy way. So cyberhugs to everyone. Your concern, good wishes,
and e-cards did a lot to make me feel better.

Helper/photographer Albert Ortega came through with a nice photo of Ron
Perlman and son (anybody able to append the son's name?) from the premiere
of Titan A.E., taken on June 13. The picture is posted in this update on
the website: http://home.fuse.net/helpnet/7-4-00.htm. To learn more about
Albert's celebrity photos, post him at ortegafoto@aol.com.

Also on the Mag7 front, I know that a video of the pilot is now available
at Blockbuster: I know because I saw it there. Whether it's available for
sale yet I'm not certain, but the video surely exists and is undoubtedly
for sale someplace, whether at Blockbuster or at any of the various video
outlets online.

Shelly Ayres has something tasty for the interested buyer. Says Shelly, "Hi
Nan - I have almost 1,000 color slides from the show that are just sitting
in a big box (mounted in plastic sheet protectors & labeled by episode).
Most are of very good quality; all are in excellent condition. I want to
sell them as a collection, mounted in the sleeves, and my asking price for
all would be $100 postpaid. Will be happy to provide additional info via
Email: ayers@RADONC.WUSTL.EDU"

Good luck, Shelly! Sounds VERY nice!

For those who have been holding their breath, it seems there really WILL be
a Terminator 3, per this item from the Scifiwire ( p://wire.scifi.com):
___________
9:00am ET, 22-June-00

Arnold Will Be Back In T3

He'll be back: Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed on the dotted line to
return as the killer cyborg in Terminator 3, according to the Hollywood
trade papers.

The third installment in the Terminator franchise is slated to go before
cameras in Los Angeles in the spring of 2001, according to The Hollywood
Reporter. Variety reported that the film is aimed at a summer 2002 release.

It's unclear whether Terminator creator James Cameron will sign on to
direct. Schwarzenegger has previously said he wouldn't do another
Terminator film without Cameron, and he repeated his desire to work with
Cameron on T3 during an interview on Access Hollywood this week.

The Reporter said the relationship is tenuous between Cameron and T3
producers Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar, and that Cameron has yet to meet
with either about the project. But the trade paper cited unnamed sources as
saying that Cameron has read the T3 script and that Schwarzenegger is
lobbying hard to bring Cameron on board. Variety cited unnamed sources
close to Cameron as saying that the director is talking with Schwarzenegger
about returning.

The film will have a budget of $100 million. No studio has agreed to
distribute the film yet.
______
Naturally, as you noticed, there's as yet no mention of any involvement by
Linda Hamilton. But under the circumstances, it doesn't seem beyond the
realm of possibility, given her continuing and pivotal role as Sarah Connor
in the other two Terminator films. We'll look for further news about this.

Helper Kathy Battershell sends news that Armin Shimerman has had a fantasy
book published. I confess that I saw it at a bookstore myself, some weeks
back, and then forgot to report it! So it's all the more welcome that Kathy
sent on the news.

06.21.00 REVIEW: Armin Shimerman's "The Merchant Prince"

There's a fine line in science fiction between creating fantastic
situations and staying rooted in reality. Whereas in fantasy the rules of
nature can be bent or broken under the convenient guise of "magic," science
fiction requires rational, believable explanations for everything that
happens. While some science fiction can go too far and stretch the realm of
believability to its breaking point, "The Merchant Prince" by Armin
Shimerman (Quark from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) and Michael Scott manages
to find the perfect realistic balance between reality and the extraordinary.

Spanning centuries, "The Merchant Prince" from Pocket Books follows the
historical figure Dr. John Dee through an epic adventure on which hangs the
fate of the planet and then some. During the Renaissance, Dee was one of
Queen Elizabeth I's most trusted agents and also a highly regarded scholar,
alchemist and rumored sorcerer.

Shimerman and Scott begin their novel with an ancient alien race of
scholars, part of a galactic consortium of races. These beings, known as
the Roc, have been studying humans for centuries, and one of the Roc has
been using Dee as a human contact, posing as an angel.

When Dee is captured, imprisoned and sentenced to death by Venice's
powerful Medici family, the Roc breaks the rules and rescues him, hiding
him in stasis, where he remains for several centuries.

Then, in the year 2099 as the Third Millennium draws near, Dee is revived
and returns to Earth to try save humanity from either destruction by its
own hand or eternal slavery at the hands of cruel alien taskmasters.

Given the implausible scope of the novel, it's pleasantly surprising that
Shimerman and Scott take the time to make every moment as realistic as
possible. The Roc are not bipedal humanoids, they're frightening creatures
whose terrifying appearance makes Dee certain he's dealing with demons.
Despite his keen mind, it takes time for Dee to adjust to the world
shattering turn of events, but not so much time that the story slows.

As in much of Star Trek, "The Merchant Prince" displays the theme that no
matter what the era human beings are special creatures with universal
traits, though Dee tends to see the worst in people. When the Roc gives Dee
the choice between a quick, merciful death and being thrown into the
chaotic world of 2099, Dee notes that while technology may change, "are men
not still men? Motivated by the vices of greed and power? Do they not still
strive to outdo their neighbor? Do they not still kill, lie and grasp?" The
Roc has no choice but to send him back to Earth.

Like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, "The Merchant Prince" tends to focus more
on the darker side of life, but with such fine attention to character and
detail, Shimerman and Scott spin a thought-provoking yet fun yarn even the
pickiest fans of science fiction can enjoy.
