First up, Gwen Lord has an announcement combined with an invitation:
"Masquerades 2000 Beauty and the Beast convention will be held this year
from September 30 to October 1 in Nottingham, England.
If anyone attending is the least bit artistic and create items to sell,
then please consider making items to sell at the convention. There is a
need for any item you can produce, whether you're able to produce much or
little. There are quite a few attending, who feel because they could only
produce 5 or 6 items, it wouldn't be worth having a dealer's table.. WRONG!
I'm setting a new standard here, to help all B&B fans, in saying there will
be NO CHARGE for the use of a dealer's table or a small part of one. Bring
your goods along and set up your stall.sell your stuff, and then do other
things. PLEASE, bring items to sell, sell them, and help keep alive our
dream. I welcome those who can bring masses of goods to sell, and I welcome
anyone who may only have one item to sell. I look forward to a bumper crop
of items we can all enjoy.
Thank you so much.
Gwen Lord"

A tantalizing note from Helper/photographer Al Ortega reports that he saw
Ron Perlman on Friday at the premiere for Price of Glory. Al continues, "I
will hopefully see him tomorrow at the IFP/Spirit Awards. I will keep you
posted."
Thanks, Al!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Speaking of Price of Glory, Helper/Correspondent Darlene Sullivan reports
that initial reports on that movie are not good.
Darlene says,
"Ron Perlman's film, "The Price of Glory," starring Jimmy Smits,
received a
solid pounding by the film critic in Variety. Smits made an unfortunate
choice for his first movie role after leaving his hit TV series "NYPD
Blue." Here is a digest of the Variety review - The film is an earnest but
flatfooted saga about a Mexican-American former boxer who obsessively
pushes his three sons into the ring in search of the success he never
enjoyed. Good intentions are all this TV-style yarn has going for it as it
moves predictably and telegraphs all its punches. The film, which closed
the Santa Barbara Film Festival, may hold some appeal for Latino audiences
in the Southwest will fold after a couple of rounds in the national movie
circuit. The screen writer's script is obvious and contrived, the director
hit the script's major points with numbing repetitiveness.... Smits plays
Arturo Ortega, the father of three sons who seem likely to be major boxing
stars but Ortega's rash, stupid and self-defeating ways mess things up for
all three boys. Smits is required to carry the entire undertaking on his
determined shoulders and makes the best of a trying situation. Ron Perlman
plays Nick Everson, a big time boxing promoter who makes overtures to
Smits' three sons because he smells major paydays with them down the line.
Obstinate Ortaga resists Everson which makes the middle son break free to
sign with Everson with results that are initially unfortunate and
ultimately tragic. For Ron Perlman fans, the best thing about the movie
appears to be that he doesn't die in this one."
For those interested in the ins and outs of TV writing, Michael Cassutt (he
was, with his brother, co-author of the episode "Fever") now has what
appears to be a regular column on the Science Fiction Weekly website.
Though his credits with B&B aren't mentioned, he's done quite a lot of
science fiction/fantasy script writing and has trenchant opinions to offer
on the business of writing for television and the vagaries of the networks.
X-Files fans (he's written for that series, too), will find it interesting,
too. The URL is: http://www.scifi.com/sfw/current/cassutt.html.
Cat Tales
I: "To Catch a Falling Star"; Cat Tales II: "I Dreamed...";
and Cat Tales
III: "Lost & Found" "Be Mine, Valentine" by Kimberly
Prosser and Lisa
Swope. Three digest sized zines. Q-fer says: (I): 12/90. V/O, PG, 71 p.
This series often assumes a universe in which neither Catherine nor Diana
has ever been involved with V. Here, V's involved in a relationship with
another woman. A most unusual story, well worth reading. (II) 2/91. V/O,
V/C, PG, 71 p, cover art only. In this volume (all by Prosser), adult V
recollects how, at a shy 22, he took an unwed, pregnant childhood friend,
Charisse - eventually Samantha's mother - into his absolute and loving
protection. Also "Touch of the Beast," a brief account of Catherine's
decision to move Below. (III) Never reviewed but flyer reads: '...short
stories with Vincent, in an alternate universe where he and Catherine
haven't met. Helper Stacy is terrified of Vincent, but is forced to work
with him to save lives.'" All in excellent condition.
Light and
Cloudshadows 6", a Beauty and the Beast TV series by Kim Prosser & Lisa
Swope. 1992. V/D, PG. 8 x 11, 131 p, much art, smallish print. Q-fer says:
Continues to be an impressive, must-have series of zines. This one is
definitely 4th season, with some young Vincent material, as well. The
standout story here is Swope's "Homecoming," showing the aftermath of
V's
return to the tunnels with his son, whom he frustratingly can't
hold-because his hands were so badly burned, wrenching the door off
Gabriel's cage. Devin and Diana to the rescue! Well researched, well
dramatized, and entirely convincing. And, for fans of industrial-strength
cute, there's Jacob's antics in "F is for Fhwy!" by Prosser."
Good condition.
The others are:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=286668490
entitled
"Beauty and the Beast TV Authentic Costume #3". Samantha's (actress
Marcie
Leeds) grey fleece pullover shirt with leather patchwork. Samantha written
on collar. Great looking piece! Female size (approximately) medium.
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=286669009
entitled
"Beauty and the Beast TV Better Worse Script" signed and numbered
(#31) by
Coordinating Producer David Schwartz. "For Better or Worse" was a
script
written by David Schwartz, Ron Perlman and their partner, Alan Smithee. It
was pitched to series Creator Ron Koslow and shelved for a possible later
date which never came due to the cancellation. Sorry about the bad scan. It
reads" BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: "For Better Or Worse" Teleplay by
Alan
Smithee. Copyright 1988. David's signature is in lower left corner. Great
condition.
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=286669425
entitled
"Beauty and the Beast TV Terrible Angel Script". Actual script from
the
show - draft dated August 3, 1987. Was later aired as Terrible Savior
(episode #2). Possibly has dialog and scenes not heard or seen in the final
episode.
Not a copy! Great condition.
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=286670121
entitled
"Beauty and the Beast TV Life Without Zine". "A Life Without
Limits"
anthology zine edited by Margaret Davis. From 1990, rated PG, 8 1/2 x 11,
214 pages. Q-fer says: "Stories centered on the premise that, after the
Trilogy, Vincent and Catherine fall asleep in his chamber and have a series
of dreams. Lions figure prominently in two; one is a Regency romance with
manor houses; one is Egyptian, with Catherine presented to the new pharaoh,
lion-headed V. You get the idea. Stories are all competently done and quite
uniform in quality." Stories and poems by Margaret Davis, Gina Alkazian,
Beth Druhan, Lucy Green, Roxanne Koogler, MariLynn (who is now a
multi-published author of romance and romantic suspense novels), Linda
Mooney, Kay Simon, Sharon Wells and others. Lots of art by Phyllis Berwick,
Dragon, Barb Gipson, Judy Ley, Rita Terrell, Holly Riedel, Star and many
others. Good condition.
