Sticks and Stones

Sticks and Stones  (airdate: Jan 6, 1989).  Laura is working at a newsstand above.  Many of the people are crowding around asking her questions.  There are so many customers that she is overwhelmed and flees.  Her boss chases her down the street and begs her to come back to work.  She does but once again there are too many people and she runs to the park.  She goes to the tunnels and stands at the main gate.  She remembers how hard it was to leave Vincent and the others but she makes up her mind to remain above.  She goes to an old building where a young man is sitting on a car.  He signs to her "What is it?"  She puts her arms around him and cries.  Catherine and Joe are discussing a  case where a gang of deaf children are robbing warehouses.  Catherine briefs the men on the gang members, then they begin to plot.  Catherine manages to convince Joe to let her have one more week to capture the kids and turn them over to Social Services.  The gang members are discussing their next robbery, involving a warehouse that has a watchman who is old and slow.  Their leader, Lincoln, assigns every member a job to do.  One man tries to convince Lincoln to leave Laura behind since she has not been involved before.  Lincoln says that if she wants to be a part of the family, she has to help.  They leave the building that night.  But they do not know that the police have been tipped off an they are waiting at the warehouse.  Catherine and Joe are in a surveillance car.  The gang approaches but one of the members sees the cops and give the sign to leave.  Catherine sees Laura running to the car and gets out.  Laura stops and stares at Catherine, then runs away.

Catherine goes to Vincent to tell him what Laura is doing now.  Vincent informs Catherine that Laura has been negligent of her helper duties for several weeks.  Catherine reveals that Laura's gang leader may have committed a murder.  Vincent tells her that Laura is subject to the laws of the Tunnel World since she is still a citizen. He promises to talk with Laura.  Laura is sleeping in bed with her friend.  Vincent goes to the fire escape and Laura wakes up.  She goes out and joins him, where he talks to her about her new life and why she didn't come to him for help.  She says she has a new family now and can do things on her own.  Vincent wants to know is she loves the man and she replies yes.  She must go to a Tunnel Council meeting.  At the meeting they confront her with her wrong doings.  She says she hasn't done anything wrong nor has she seen any murder.  Laura leaves the chamber angry because the people above and below have rejected her.  Catherine is  at work lecturing a man and tells him that he knows her better than to get involved with the gang member.  The man she is lecturing is Laura's boyfriend, Jerry.  He says he did not mean to fall in love but he has.  Catherine tells him to stay away form the gang and Laura for the rest of the investigation.  Lincoln is accusing Laura of being the squealer.  He finally gets her to admit that she hates hearing people.  Jerry comes into the room and Lincoln reluctantly leaves Laura alone.  Jerry and Laura go outside to the old car where they dream of driving to Canada.  He asks her to go away with him for real.  She agrees and he tells her that he can really hear and that he is an undercover cop.  Laura now believes that he used her to get close to the gang.  She runs away into the alley crying.  Jerry calls Catherine from a phone booth.  He tells her that Lincoln believes he is the traitor and that he went back to get Laura.  The gang appears around the phone booth with baseball bats.  Catherine can only listen as they smash the booth.  At the hideout, they accuse Jerry of being the traitor.  His punishment is to be Sticks and Stones.  Laura comes in and sees what they are doing to Jerry.  She runs to her old boss to get him to inform Vincent of what is going on.  The gang ties Jerry to a fence.  They approach him with rocks and sticks in their hands.  They begin to terrorize him when Laura comes up.  She puts herself between him and the attackers.  A police helicopter flies over as several police cars pull up.  Lincoln has raised a cinderblock and is about to kill Jerry.  Vincent jumps from the roof and knocks out Lincoln then flees the scene.  Catherine arrives and helps Laura free Jerry.  Laura and Vincent are in the tunnels.  Laura is ashamed but Vincent tells her that she has dealt with the situation and she will be okay.  She explains that Jerry wants to meet him and Vincent answers "someday".  She hugs him and Catherine begins to leave.  Before she walks out, she signs "I love you" to both of them.  Vincent asks Catherine if she thinks Laura will be happy.  She tells him that Laura has learned to follow her heart.  Her life may not be simpler but it will be happier.
