For Hamilton, 'American Pie' looks like a slice of her real life

Linda Hamilton, who filed for divorce from James Cameron last week, says shooting the indie film "American Pie" proved to be the most cathartic thing she could have done. "It's a wacky family comedy with Eugene Levy, who leaves me for another woman," says Hamilton, whose husband left her for "Titanic" actress Suzy Amis last April. Four months later, "Pie" started, and, she says now, "It was hysterically funny playing the wife of a man who's left for another woman right on the heels of my own personal disaster. I mean, the woman I play is just such a wreck, angry and upset...very much mirroring my own feelings, jealousy, anger...all that stuff. It really forced me to look at those feelings and use them -- but try to be funny."
She recalls the day "I had to do a monologue to tell my daughter (about her father leaving). It was like a three-page rant. I mean, I cried for hours doing the scene. When it was all done, everybody was like, 'Oh my God, you broke my heart.' I said, 'But did I make you laugh?' I don't care about breaking hearts anymore. I just want to make people laugh. All of this stuff in the last year has done nothing but define my sense of joy."

Hamilton, who stars with Lynn Whitfield in the USA Network's "The Color of Courage" Feb. 10, notes that what helped keep her going was "the network of friends, support and love and prayer that came my way. I go to church, and I believe in that community. Probably the biggest moment in my life was when I realized I was really loved on a level that is meaningful -- and that sustained me. I'm still lifted by that."

A Change of Pace

Linda Hamilton goes before the cameras in February in the indie film "The Guilty," with Bill Pullman. "It's a weird little noirish film about a successful lawyer's life coming apart because of one mistake. I play Bill's wife," says Hamilton, who filed for divorce from director James Cameron last month. The "Terminator" actress--who has the independent film "American Pie" upcoming and the USA Network's "The Color of Courage" airing Feb. 10-- says she took the part in "The Guilty" because "I wanted to do a real glam role. She's a super-glamorous wife...monied and all that stuff. I just want to do anything that's different, so people will say, 'Is that Linda Hamilton?' In the past year, I've done characters from the '40's, '70's and '90's. I want to do it all."
