Test Puzzle and Completing a Distributable
When creating a crossword, you can test how the puzzle will operate as a distributable by clicking on the Create Mode check-box on the toolbar of the main (grid) screen, so that the check box is empty. Alternatively, you can click on the Edit menu on the main menu, and select the Create Mode option. This takes the program out of create mode, and puts it into test mode.
Test mode works in the same way as with a distributable file, so you can test how it will work when distributed to other users.
This section is also useful for those who are completing puzzles in distributable format. It gives an overview of how to complete the puzzle(s).

| Completing a Puzzle | Distributable files are
WordPuzzle Pro files that hold a puzzle in a form designed to be used by
Puzzle Solvers. These files are not changeable, except by the original author, and except to save a partially completed puzzle. So if you would like to complete puzzles using WordPuzzle Pro created by other people using WordPuzzle Pro, then this page may contain all you need to know about the system. A distributable file does not allow you to see answer information directly. Some distributable files will allow you to print an answers list. This is at the discretion of the publisher of the distributable. When you open a distributable file, you will be presented with a blank grid. If ClueTips have been enabled, you can click on a numbered square to see the clue(s) for that square for 5 seconds. Click on it again to see it for any longer. If you double-click on the square, and any hints have been included with the puzzle, you will see hint(s) for the clue(s) for that square for 5 seconds. To fill in a puzzle, use the editing keys and click using the mouse as if you were creating a puzzle yourself. Type-out words from the cursor, like with a word-processor. You can also switch between across and down modes so that your typing follows horizontally or vertically. According to how the author of the puzzle has set-up the puzzle, you may find that incorrect answers show on the grid in a different colour. What happens is that the letters on the grid are compared to the answer grid. If the letter matches, it can appear in a different colour than if it does not match. This can be useful to see if you are on the right track. It does however give another avenue for finding the answers in a rather sneaky fashion (e.g. try all the letters in the alphabet in a square until it goes to the correct colour!) You can see the clues listed as they were typed out originally (without the answers) by using the option to go to the current clue. Note that you can click on the Extra tab if you wish to see the alternative clue, hint, or explanation for the clue. Press the Esc key on the keyboard to close the Clues window again. Finally, you can print out the grid if you wish to complete it away from the computer. If you have completed any of the grid, and you choose the Answers Grid with Clues report, then the clues you have already completed will be printed out together with the uncompleted clues. You can also save the distributable file again if you have a partially completed puzzle, so that you can come back to it later, partially completed. You can use the MRU list in the file menu to re-open the file if you wish. |

| Timer Facility | When you toggle to
the test mode, or when you open a distributable file, a stop-watch style
timer starts ticking away in the toolbar at the bottom of the grid. This
is designed for the competitive person who wishes to see how long it takes
to complete the puzzle. Note that the elapsed time gets saved with the
file, so if the application is closed and the puzzle is returned to later,
the elapsed time is retained.
If you are in test mode, then you can reset the timer at any time by double-clicking on the toolbar where the timer information is displayed. This does not work when using the distributable to deter cheating! When you save a puzzle as a distributable, the timer automatically gets reset to zero in the saved version, so when it is opened for the first time, the timer starts from the beginning. So long as the puzzle is not saved, then the file can be reopened at zero indefinitely. |

| Unlocking a distributable file |
If you created the distributable
file, and you wish to make amendments to it, then you can unlock the distributable file
(if you have the full version of the system) by choosing the File menu on the
main menu of the main (grid) window, and selecting the Unprotect option. Note
that anyone else owning the full version of the program could also do this. This is why it
is advisable to give the puzzle
a
password before saving a puzzle as a distributable. If you did save the puzzle as a distributable with a filename, when you choose the Unprotect option, you will be prompted for the password you originally gave. You will only be able to unlock the puzzle if you give the correct password. When you have made your amendments, you can save the puzzle as a distributable again, or as any other type of puzzle (normal, template, or HTML). Note that this facility is only available in the Full (non-ShareWare) version of the application. |
