Synchronising The grid words and clues are held separately. In order to link the clues to the words on the grid, it is necessary to click on the Refresh Button button. You can do this using the keyboard by holding down the Alt key and pressing R or by pressing F5 (commonly used for Refresh in Windows-based programs).

The grid will also be automatically numbered according to the position of the outs on the grid.

If you have setting enabled in the properties section for the puzzle, then the puzzle will also be checked for duplicate words. As a rule, the same word should never appear more than once in the same puzzle.

What actually happens during this process is that all the clues (across, down, and pending) are thrown into a pool, and are then pulled out of the pool one-by-one when they match the words on the grid. Any remaining clues are placed in the pending section.

The clue numbers will be a different colour once the clue (or clues) that the number commences is completed. In this way, you have any easy colour-coded way to tell which clues on the grid have been completed. Note that this colour-coding only gets updated when you click on the Refresh Button button.

Viewing the Clues Window To view the clues window, so that you can enter a clue, you have a number of options:-
Look at the clue that matches the word starting at the currently selected grid square.
Menu: Clues | Goto Selected. Keyboard: F8
View Clues windows at the position selected when last exited the window.
Menu: Clues | View... Keyboard: F9. Mouse: Right-click over toolbar.
View Across section of   Clues window
Menu: Clues | View Across. Keyboard: Alt+C A
View Down section of   Clues window
Menu: Clues | View Down. Keyboard: Alt+C D
View Pending section of   Clues window
Menu: Clues | View Pending. Keyboard: Alt+C P
Closing the Clues Window Whilst viewing the clues window, close it either by pressing the Esc key, or by clicking on the Close button, or by holding down the Alt key and pressing C, or by clicking on the X button at the top-right hand corner of the Clues window.

This will return you to viewing the puzzle grid again.

Entering a Clue To enter information for a clue,
Click on the tab (Across or Down) for the direction of the word for which you wish to enter a clue. If you wish to enter a clue that you have not yet written into the grid, click on the Pending tab to enter the clue.
A list of clue numbers corresponding to the numbers on the grid are shown for Across and Down clues.
For clues where words are completed, click on the row containing the clue you want to change, and that row will be highlighted.
For a pending clue, a blank row may already be available on the grid. Otherwise, click on the Add Button button (or hold down the Alt key and press the A key) to add a new pending clue.
To enter the clue text, make sure the tab in the bottom portion of the screen is selected on Clue Details by clicking on that tab, and click into the box headed Clue to the left of it.
Now start typing a clue for the answer.
If the clue is a multi-part clue, and this is the second or after word of the clue, then leave the clue details blank unless you want specific text to appear in the puzzle when it is printed out. Otherwise, when printed, the second and after words automatically produce some text to advise the person doing the puzzle to refer to the first word in the clue, giving the first word's location.
Changing the Answer To change the answer for a clue
Ensure the tab in the bottom portion of the screen is selected on Clue Details by clicking on that tab, and click into the box headed Answer to the left of it.
Start typing an answer for the clue. The letters will be copied to the appropriate squares on the grid automatically. The length text will also be updated automatically, for this and any other linked words.
Note that a change will be rejected if the change to the answer would make that clue fail to fit in with other clues that stem from the word on the grid.
To change a letter that does not affect other clues, highlight that letter in the clue by clicking to the left of that letter, holding down the SHIFT key (just below Caps Lock, looks like an empty upwards pointing arrow), and press the right-arrow key. This highlights the letter. Now press the letter on the keyboard that you want to change, and the highlighted letter will be replaced both in the clue, and on the grid.
Note that changing the answer in the clue window automatically updates the grid, but if you change the answer on the grid, it does not automatically update the clue window. This is intentional, to avoid accidentally overtyping valid clues with incorrect words. However, for brand new words on the grid, a new (empty) clue will automatically be created for you to fill in when you click on the Refresh Button key.
As long as doing so would not affect other words on the grid crossing this word, you can delete the whole answer, either by highlighting it and clicking the Delete button, or by right-clicking over the answer and clicking on the Clear Answer menu option, or by pressing the - (minus) key on the numeric keypad.
Entering an Alternative Clue Many crossword puzzles have two sets of clues - e.g. Cryptic and Straight or Hard and Easy. To enter an alternative clue (e.g. Cryptic might be the normal Clue, Straight the alternative or vice versa), follow these steps:-
Ensure the tab in the bottom portion of the screen is selected on Extra by clicking on that tab.
Click into the box headed Alt. Clue to the left of it.
Type the alternative text for the clue in this box, or alter the text already there.
Entering a Hint If you have created a particularly difficult puzzle, or one which is designed for beginners, you may wish to be able to include a list of hints to aid the solution of the puzzle. Follow these steps to include a hint for the clue that you have selected:-
Ensure the tab in the bottom portion of the screen is selected on Extra by clicking on that tab.
Click into the box headed Hint to the left of it.
Type the hint for the clue in this box, or alter the text already there.
Entering an Explanation (Solution) You may wish to include an explanation as to how to get from the clue to the solution. This can be particularly useful for cryptic crosswords, where sometimes the person doing the crossword may be in the situation of looking up the answer, but still unable to see what connection the answer has to the clue! It may also be useful to include with a 'beginners' crossword.
Ensure the tab in the bottom portion of the screen is selected on Extra by clicking on that tab.
Click into the box headed Explanatn to the left of it.
Type the explanation for the solution in this box, or alter the text already there.
Adding/Deleting a Category Categories for a sample clueCategories are used to identify the type of clue. They are particularly useful when adding the clue to the Clue Pool, as the clue pool can be searched by category, which means when you want to reuse clues of a particular type (e.g. for a themed puzzle, or if you only want to use straight clues), you can find them easily.
In the Available Category list, each category has next to it a number in parentheses, which shows the number of times the category is used in the puzzle or clue pool (whichever you are looking at).
Note that adding categories and copying clues to the clue pool are only available in the
Available in Full Product Only version.

If you have set up some categories already, you can add a new category to the list for the clue by following these steps:-

Ensure the tab in the bottom portion of the screen is selected on Categories by clicking on that tab.
Double-Click on the category you wish to add from the list on the left hand side of the page (underneath the heading Available Categories
The category will be added to the box on the right-hand side, which lists all the categories applicable to the currently selected clue.
To remove the category from the list again, you would double-click on the category in the right hand box to remove it for the clue. This DOES NOT remove it from the list of available categories.
Copying categories from the Pool When you start a new puzzle, you may wish to make use of the generic set of categories that is used in the currently loaded Clue Pool. The aids in keeping consistency between puzzles and the Clue Pool, and also makes categorization much easier. To copy across any new categories, simply click on the Clues menu and click on the Copy Categs From Pool option. The computer will tell you how many categories it has copied across to the puzzle.
Removing unused categories Once you have finished your puzzle, you may wish to remove any categories that you didn't use, in order to save space and improve clarity. To do this, simply click on the Clues button and click on the Remove Extraneous Categs option. The computer will tell you how many categories have been removed.
Deleting a Clue You may wish to abandon a clue if it doesn't fit in with your puzzle. If you have created the clue to go with the answer already, it would be a good idea to save the clue to the Clue Pool before deletion, just in case it is useful for the future.
To remove the currently selected clue, and clear the clue from the grid at the same time, click on the Delete Button button at the top of the Clues window, or hold down the Alt key and press the D key.
Dragging a clue to the grid If you have any clues in the pending list -- for example, copied from the clue pool, or just added by yourself -- you may wish to place that clue on the grid.  You have three ways of doing this:-
Manual:
Click in the grid at the position where you wish to place the clue
Type the clue text in the appropriate space
Click on the Refresh Button button.
From Grid:
    • Click in the grid at the position where you wish to place the clue
    • Right-click somewhere over the toolbar to show clues window
    • Click on the Pending tab
    • From the list of clues shown in the grid, click on the clue you wish to fill in the space indicated on the grid.
    • Press the key. The word will be placed in the grid if it fits the space.
Drag-and-drop:
    • Click on the grey square just to the left of the clue in the list of clues
Example row forpending clue. Note grey box to its left.
    • Hold down the left hand mouse button
    • Drag the clue over to the square on the grid where you wish the clue to go.
    • Let go of the mouse button. If the clue fits in the space, it will automatically be dropped into the correct space on the grid, and the clue will be linked to that numbered square.
Creating multi-part clues Some multiple-word answers are scattered around various locations on the puzzle grid. To provide for this requirement, WordPuzzle Pro has multi-part clues. This means that numbered clues can be linked together to form a single effective clue. The order of clues in the list reflects the order of the words in the answer.

There are two methods of linking clues together:-

Split clue:-
Type the answer (each words separated with a space) into the space for the answer.
Highlight all but the first word in the list.
Press the * key on the numeric keypad, otherwise click on the right-hand mouse button over the answer entry box, and click on the Copy Selection to New Clue option.
The unhighlighted word becomes the first word in the linked-list of clues. The highlighted word(s) becomes the second word in the linked-list of clues. This will be placed in the Pending section.
If you have more than 2 words, repeat this procedure for the remainder of the words until all words have been separated out into separate clues.
Link Clues:-
You can create the clues first as separate words, for example by typing the clues in the grid, and pressing the Refresh Button button, the clues will be created for you.
Click on the clue for the first word to select that clue in the Clue window.
Click on the Multi-Clue Mode button button.
Click on the clue for the second word.
Click on the Link Clue button button.
Repeat the last two steps for each extra word to link.
Click on the Multi-Clue Mode button button again to finish the linking process.
Note that if you are clicked into the Clue Details tab at the bottom of the Clues window, you can see a list of the clue words to the right of the window.
Double-click on any of these words to view that particular part of the multi-clue

Example of multi-part clue (TENDER-HEARTED)

Change order of words in multi-part clue You may find that you have added the words in the wrong order, included a word by mistake, or need to insert an extra word later. These actions can all be performed very simply:-
Click on any of the words in the multi-part clue in the Clues window.
Click into the Clue Details tab at the bottom of the Clues window, you can see a list of the clue words to the right of the window.
To delete any of the clues within the list of clues, click on the word in this list, and press the Delete button on the keyboard.
To view the clue for one of the words in the list, double-click on the required word in the list.
To add more words to the list, just click on the Multi-Clue Mode button button and add words as described in the previous section.
To change the position of a word in the list, click on the word to move, and click on the Move word up button button to move the clue up the list, or the Move word down button button to move the clue down the list.
Add Clue to the Clue Pool  When you have created a clue, you may wish to store the clue for use in a future puzzle. This is particularly useful if you wish to have consistency on clues for particular words when reused in different puzzles, and also if you wish to pull out words by category (e.g. cryptic only, straight only, themed etc.)

To add the currently loaded clue to the clue pool, simply click on the Add clue to pool button. If you have added the clue already, the program will warn you to prevent adding the same clue twice. Note that you can add the same word with different clue(s)/categories.

Add ALL new clues to the Clue Pool  It is possible to add any new clues that you have created in the current puzzle to the currently open clue pool in one go. It is worth making sure that you have categorised your clues first, so that they can be easily located within the clue pool later. Note that if you have added exactly the same clue already, it will not be added again to the Clue Pool, so you can use this facility to update clues in batches as you are creating your puzzle - you don't have to wait until you have completed the whole puzzle!

To add the clues to the clue pool from the current puzzle, click on the Clues menu, and click on the Copy Categs From Pool menu option. On completion, a dialog box will show you how many clues have been added to the pool.
